Early Life

Growing up in New Jersey, he was surrounded by a family deeply rooted in the finance industry. From his dad’s 20-year tenure at Citi Group to his mom’s impressive career at Nomura, a Japanese bank, and his grandpa’s extensive experience at Prudential, Wall Street was practically in his blood.

But it wasn’t just the financial markets that fascinated him; it was also the unwavering support and love he received from his family.

Despite attending a small private high school, Alex decided to break the mold and pursue his dreams at the University of Michigan. While he may have been considered average in high school, his determination and eagerness to explore new horizons led him to embrace the opportunity to study business at Michigan.

Just like his parents, he aspired to make a mark in the world of finance.

Career

He followed the traditional path in finance. After completing his freshman, sophomore, and junior years, he secured internships in finance in New York. Fortunately, he landed a full-time job at Morgan Stanley after graduating from college in Michigan.

However, he realized that he needed to find a way to break free from the cycle of playing Mario Kart or FIFA. That’s when he decided to dedicate his time to helping fellow students prepare for job interviews during their senior year.

During mock interviews, he would always ask students how they stayed updated with the business world and what they read. Surprisingly, most of them would mention The Wall Street Journal, but when asked why, they would simply say it was because their parents told them to. They didn’t actually enjoy reading it but felt obligated to do so.

This realization struck a chord with Alex Lieberman. He found it absurd that students were consuming content about an industry they were going to be a part of just because their parents told them to. This sparked an idea in him.

During his senior year in college, in 2014, he started writing a daily business Roundup. Initially called Market Corner, he would use a Microsoft Word template to compile it every day. Since he didn’t have a website, he would convert the template into a PDF, attach it to an email, and send it to his list of 45 people that he had built through Michigan.

And that’s how Morning Brew came to life, with Alex’s determination to provide valuable business insights to those who actually wanted to read them.

The Birth of Morning Brew

Morning Brew

In 2015, he and his partner Austin Rief embarked on an extraordinary journey that would transform the realm of business news. Together, they established Morning Brew, a remarkable daily email newsletter designed to deliver business and finance updates in a concise and captivating format.

This newsletter, with its witty writing style and knack for simplifying complex information, quickly gained traction among young professionals.

The inception of Morning Brew was driven by the founders’ recognition of a gap in the market. Traditional news sources were often dense and time-consuming, making it difficult for the younger demographic to stay informed about business and finance.

Lieberman and Rief saw an opportunity to create a product that not only provided relevant news but also catered to the preferences and habits of the digital-native generation.

Why Austin Rief As A Co-Founder?

While setting up Market Corner, Alex received an unexpected email from Austin Reef, a fellow student at Michigan who was younger and in the same fraternity. Despite not knowing each other, Austin, who was also studying in the business school, offered to meet in the main area of the business school.

During their discussion, Austin shared insightful feedback on how to enhance Alex’s newsletter. This encounter served as Alex’s initial exposure to entrepreneurship. Impressed by Austin’s direct and practical feedback, Alex realized their collaboration potential and eventually invited him to join as a co-founder.

The early days of launching Morning Brew

Alex & Austin were obsessed with two things.

  • How do they make this newsletter as good as humanly possible?
  • How do they grow it as quickly as possible?

To make this happen, they made a direct approach to students who were avid readers of their newsletter. They enthusiastically invited them, saying, “Hey, if you have a passion for writing about business and dream of reaching a wide audience, we’d be thrilled if you joined us at the brew.”

As a result, they discovered a talented group of eight writers from various universities. These dedicated individuals contributed two captivating stories every week to the newsletter.

It’s worth noting that these writers weren’t motivated by monetary compensation; they simply wanted to establish their brand and share their thoughts with the world. Their enthusiasm for morning brew and its values was truly inspiring.

Disrupting the News Landscape

Morning Brew’s secret to success lies in its distinctive news delivery approach. Unlike traditional news outlets, the newsletter doesn’t bombard readers with lengthy articles.

Instead, it provides concise and captivating content, covering a wide range of topics from finance and technology to lifestyle and culture.

By infusing humor and relatability into business news, Lieberman’s strategy proved to be a game-changer. Morning Brew’s conversational tone sets it apart from the more formal and traditional news outlets, resonating exceptionally well with its target audience – young professionals who crave information without compromising their time or entertainment value.

How do they get early subscribers?

Alex Liberman and Austin Rief dedicated an entire semester to engaging with students through numerous club meetings and classes, passionately advocating for the merits of Morning Brew.

They would enter a classroom and deliver a concise two-minute pitch, highlighting why Morning Brew was the ultimate business newsletter in the world.

The best part? It was completely free, with no strings attached. They assured students that if they didn’t enjoy it, they could easily unsubscribe without any hard feelings. To gather subscribers, they would distribute a sheet of paper and a pen, encouraging students to jot down their email addresses.

After each class, they diligently transferred all the email addresses manually, resulting in an impressive initial subscriber base of 2,500 to 5,000.

It’s hard for Alex Lieberman to quit his job

He graduated from Michigan. When he graduated in June of 2015. He believed he had 10,000 subscribers but it’s hard to ignore the fact that there are 10,000 subscribers on board, but without any monetization efforts or a well-defined business plan, there’s a definite need for some strategic thinking.

He was thinking to himself, there’s no way to convince his mom who has wanted him to work in finance for the last. So went to Morgan Stanley, and he was there from June of 2015 to September of 2016.

About a year later, in September 2016, he decided to leave his job at Morgan Stanley and focus entirely on the morning brew.

He decided to leave because of Austin. He was two years younger and had a junior-year internship offer in investment banking. He had to choose between going full-time into investment banking or continuing with Morning Brew.

It was a crucial moment, and they opted to go full-time. Alex’s main reason for this decision was the fear of regret. He didn’t want to stay at Morgan Stanley and watch someone else succeed with their version of Morning Brew.

From September 2016 to around June 2017, he dedicated himself entirely to brew. During this period, he worked independently while Austin was still in school until he graduated from Michigan. Once he completed his studies, he teamed up with Alex, and together they embarked on their full-time brewing journey.
